CCIJ Member Winston Mwale’s investigation on a maternity ward in Mchinji was recognized at the virtual Highway Africa event, coming in second for the 2021 Southern Africa Media Award in Social Accountability Reporting and winning $200. Last Thursday, our ongoing training series continued with a photography workshop featuring Nengi Nelson and Benedicte Kurzen. And on Sunday, the CCIJ hosted our first ever Midyear Report Fundraising Event to raise money for our community.

Photography Conversations Series with Nengi Nelson and Benedicte Kurzen: Working in Your Own Backyard

Join us on Friday, June 18 at 4 PM Nigerian Time/11 AM US Eastern Time for our second training in our new photography conversation series. We’re excited to have Nengi Nelson and Benedicte Kurzen who will speak about their work as documentary photographers in Nigeria and the successes and challenges of being an aspiring photographer. On April 29, 2021, CCIJ member Sonja Smith of The Namibian was recognized at the EFN Namibia Journalism Awards Ceremony. She won the Best Agriculture & Environment Category award and was awarded Journalist of the Year.

Member Spotlight: Christina Orieschnig

Writing “Drought of the Sinking Delta” brought together two of Christina Orieschnig’s favorite things: environmental science and journalism. Orieschnig is in her final year of earning her PhD and has studies focus on the Mekong River Delta in Vietnam, where the nearly 3,000 foot long river culminates after flowing from the Tibetan Plateau in China through and along the borders Myanmar, Laos, Thailand and Cambodia.
